6 Tips to Manage your Time as a Personal Trainer

How to manage your time as a personal trainer.

Are you a personal trainer who is struggling to manage your time? As a personal trainer, we understand you are always on the go. You have a demanding schedule, and you need to be adaptable. Industry data shows that many PTs get overwhelmed as their businesses grow and their schedules start to get busier.  In this blog post, we will show you 5 simple tips to help boost your time management skills – these are just some simple hacks to help you get everything done without getting stressed or anxious!

Set SMART Goals

You establish goals with your clients every day, but do you take a moment to think about your own? Identifying your life, weekly and daily goals will help you develop your mission, vision and purpose.

Set goals that are achievable and measurable. Use the SMART method when setting goals. In essence, make sure the goals you set are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Be sure to write them down, this helps you see a clear picture of the goals you want yourself to attain.

Stay on Top of Weekly Planning

Make sure you start every week with a clear idea of what you need to do – what needs to get done THAT DAY/ WEEK. Consider making it a habit to, at the end of each workday, write out your “to-do” list for the next workday. That way you can hit the ground running the next morning.

Once you start planning your week, you will find your ability to focus and complete tasks will actually increase. Weekly planning will allow you to make progress in many different aspects of your life. Remember “Fail to plan, Plan to fail”.

Prioritize your Tasks

An important trait to possess. In order to successfully manage your time, you need the ability to prioritize the important and urgent things. Often, it’s the hardest or most time-consuming tasks are the ones that people start to procrastinate on.

Prioritize your tasks based on importance and urgency. For example, look at your daily tasks and determine which are:

  1. Important and urgent: Do these tasks right away.
  2. Important but not urgent: Decide when to do these tasks.
  3. Urgent but not important: Delegate these tasks if possible.
  4. Not urgent and not important: Set these aside to do later.

If you want to become successful at time management you must realize, there is no time, the time is now. By prioritizing your to-do list in terms of urgency and importance, you will begin to manage your time more efficiently.

Be Disciplined and Stay Focused

In order to excel at something, you need to be disciplined. As a personal trainer, you already know how important discipline is to your health and fitness. Some people find it easier to think of creating new habits rather than discipline. Discipline and focus, in regards to time management, simply means that if you are scheduled to work on “x”, work solely on “x” and nothing else.  Taking time to focus on solely one thing at a time helps you be more focused and efficient. Also try to make the small extra effort to decide on how much time you need to allot for each task can also help you recognize potential problems before they arise. That way you can make plans for dealing with them.

Take Time to Slow Down

An important reason to efficiently manage your time is to prevent becoming burnt out. When doing a lot of tasks without a break, it is harder to stay focused and motivated. Allow some downtime between tasks to clear your head and refresh yourself. Consider grabbing a brief nap, going for a short walk, or meditating.

Automate some of your business tasks – working intelligently

There are many benefits of automating business processes, and we can define the main ones as: Making processes more efficient and effective. Facilitate monitoring and management. Assist in decision-making. Enable continuous process improvement. Improve customer service. Replace or control human tasks with automation. Get some software that manages your PARQs, Weekly check-ins, client feedback,  session reminders, bookings and rescheduling, taking payments, receipting, financial tracking etc. Today technology is here to help and there are some great systems out there that can save you hours by doing the basics for you – especially as you grow your business and become even busier.
