How the Pandemic Changed the Fitness Industry

How the Pandemic changed the Fitness Industry

A year has passed since the Coronavirus pandemic hit the entire world and mandatory mandates took control of our lives came into effect.

For the past 12 months we’ve seen businesses big and small close their doors. But when a door closes another door opens. With the massive setback the pandemic has caused, people are quick to adapt by going digital.

Let’s look back on how the fitness industry evolved. What has changed for better and for worse? And, how have we as an industry adapted to these rather necessary transformations?

It’s not about the bikini body

If there’s one thing that the lockdown made us realize, it’s that being fit and healthy certainly does pay off as healthy individuals according to World Health Organization (WHO) have better chances at beating the virus than un healthy ones.

As people became more aware of their health and what they put in their bodies, there was a focus on living healthier lifestyles.

This may seem ironic knowing how many gyms remained shut down due to the lockdown measures. However, individuals far and wide who never had interest before for gyms and fitness became furthermore concerned about the new normal sedentary lifestyles and how it puts them more at risk.

In light of all that was happening fitness has come to occupy a much more sensible space in our lives whilst we continue to struggle to stay healthy while working and studying from home. Fitness is not about a chiseled body now or getting your summer bods ready, but rather about a lifestyle focused around health, wellness, and nutrition.

Going Digital

We know you’ve heard this a lot but we’re going to say it again – the fitness industry is going digital.

With all the restrictions mandated all over the world and the ever-growing awareness in the importance of fitness spiked the rise of online gyms and workout to fill in the gaps caused by the pandemic.

With the fitness market becoming more and more saturated with digitization it does not only help to keep members engaged from afar and provide them with a fitness service that is accessible during COVID-19 but also, sustain business and livelihoods of fitness coach and trainers.

Our Thoughts

The fitness industry certainly has a lot to get form the successes and lessons learned from the pandemic to quickly create future-focused solutions. At the heart of this should be mindful growth and willingness to pivot towards new norms, for example, by working hand in hand with other industries such as tech.

We have all seen how quickly life can come at you. The fact that the fitness industry is still fighting this uphill battle, is proof of leaders with resilience and capability for innovation.
