The Beginnings of a PT: Steps to Becoming a Personal Trainer

Dedicating your time, money, and energy to staying fit and healthy can be a career choice for many. By putting in the effort to make yourself active and in good shape you can help other people achieve their fitness dreams by becoming a Personal Trainer!

Personal trainers are professionals who specialize in helping clients achieve their fitness goals. They usually offer individualized training programs, and they often work out at gyms or health clubs. But with today’s world, personal training has moved onto the digital space where you can train clients to be fit and healthy virtually!

Interested? Well, then you may want to start your journey by reading this article because here, we’ll be discussing the steps to being a Personal Trainer!

Be absolutely sure about this career choice

Before you actually go out and start gaining potential clients, the first step to becoming a Personal Trainer is being absolutely certain that this is the career path that you want to take. You need to know that it will be something that you enjoy doing, as well as something that you’re passionate about. Being a Personal Trainer means conditioning yourself to serve and help the client achieve their fitness goals to become active and healthy.

Starting your Personal Training career means putting in a lot of focus and determination in changing people’s lives. So if you’re ready for that kind of career, then you’ll be all set!

Get Certified!

After you’ve set your mind to a career of helping clients with their health and fitness goals, the next thing you need to do is get certified!

Being a Personal Trainer means you are someone knowledgeable and experienced in the fitness industry. But that’s not all there is to it because, in order for clients to see you as a professional, you will need to get Personal Training Certification.

And it’s not just about getting your clients to see you as a professional as well. Getting certified means getting additional training and knowledge on health and fitness, which you can then use to up the quality of training you provide your clients and can even use on yourself at times.

You can get your Personal Training Certification from CIMSPA(the Chartered Insitute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) accredited businesses like Diverse Trainers, Storm Fitness Academy, Study Active, PT Academy, and Origym.

By investing in these training courses and going through a certification exam, you will be adding more credibility to yourself as a Personal Trainer and in some courses, they also help you in managing your Personal Training Business!

Choosing Your Specialty

Getting certified is just the beginning of your journey! After getting your certificate, you’ll then need to choose a field you want to specialize in.

You may have gotten an idea of what field you’d want to do so from the course you took, so it’ll be a good start to finding out what you would want to focus on. If the training course you took didn’t show you a field you would want to specialize in, then no worries! You can still find a niche tailored to you in this Fitness Industry.

When you’ve chosen your specialty, you can then start creating fitness programs centered around it. It can include basic exercises or advanced ones, weight management, nutrition, and even other exercise programs you believe are related to your fitness niche.

Make sure to use the knowledge you’ve gained from the courses that you took to really build a program that’ll improve your potential clients’ health and wellness.

Build a Website.

I know this step is a bit out of the blue but hear me out! At the height of the pandemic Personal Trainers needed to adapt their business in order to reach out to their clients. They did this by transferring most, if not all, of their training programs and services online. And ever since then it has stuck around the industry due to its effectiveness for both the Trainer and the client!

By building a website, or even just your social media accounts, you are able to take your fitness services to the internet where they can reach hundreds, if not thousands of possible clients!

But how do you actually create a website? Well, there are a bunch of ready-to-use tools and systems that you can use to start building your website from scratch! You can also check out this guide here by NRPT for a quick guide on creating websites for Personal Trainers.

So in order to start off strong as a Personal Trainer, make sure to build a website that provides value to your clients and useful information for anyone that may come across it. And when they read those blogs or articles that you’ve got posted up, they’ll feel a stronger urge to send you that message and inquire about what you are offering!

Land Your First Client!

Now you’re all set in becoming a Personal Trainer! All that’s left is the hard part, which is getting an actual client to work with you.

Landing your first client will without a doubt be one of the most anxious moments of your life. But don’t worry and remember all of the preparations you have already done!

If you’ve applied to work in a gym as a Personal Trainer, you can start by surveying the gym floor for potential clients. You don’t even need to start selling them anything to start. You can just greet them by saying hi and getting to know their names. This will help you establish an easy connection with them and will eventually lead to a conversation between you and the gym members.

It is important to establish rapport when talking to people, so make sure to ask them about their fitness journey or share some of yours to really create that connection. You can then progress that potential client along and even give some advice or tips while conversing with them which can help you land them.

You can also start with friends and families that may want to get into a healthy lifestyle. By offering your training services to them you can start building your clientele through word of mouth

Finally, another way you can start getting clients is by using your website and social media to your advantage. This definitely helps if you already have a following on social media since you can provide them with training which again, helps build your client base.

Becoming a Personal Trainer is no joke. A lot may think that you should just get big and strong and then start charging people who are looking for advice, but here you can understand that there is a structured way how one can become a Fitness Professional.

If you want to start a personal training business, you need to be prepared to put in long hours and work hard. It takes time to build up the confidence to start and even longer to get clients and referrals. To succeed, you must be willing to invest in yourself and your career fully. This includes getting certified as a professional Personal Trainer, building a website to help provide more value and information to your programs and business, and making sure you build your client base by asking your friends or families to help you out. Do these steps, and you are well on your way to becoming a Personal Trainer!
