The Truth About Being a Personal Trainer. And The Importance of Strategy in Your Personal Training Business.

So, after years and years of hard work and dedication, you were able to reach the dream physique you’ve wanted ever since you were a young boy. With massive shoulders, huge quads, and the desire to train and help other people work towards their goals you decided to become a personal trainer. But even after all the certifications, experience, and knowledge you’ve gained in all those years, you’re still finding it difficult to land more than 3 or 4 clients per month.

This is the truth for a lot of personal trainers. PTs struggle to build a client base and don’t know how to market themselves effectively and this can often lead to them either giving up or putting themselves in a small box that just waits for the next client to come in through the door.

That is the reality for most, but it doesn’t have to be yours. Because growing a personal training business is not only doable, but you can also succeed in it with one simple word. Strategy.

Why strategize in the first place?

When you decide to hit the gym or enter the basketball court or hit the field to run you always have a goal in mind. Whether it’s to hit a new PR, make ten 3’s in a row, or run a mile in record time, there’s always something you are trying to attain, and the best way to get there is by strategizing your journey to do so.

Take this article from Birmingham City Business School which states that having a strategy is linked to having an outline of your goals. And without a well-outlined business strategy, your business will lack direction, efficiency, and even profitability.

Don’t believe us? Well, Harvard seems to agree. According to this study, 90% of companies fail to reach their strategic objectives. This means it’s very likely for business owners do not even reach their full potential because of poor planning and strategy.

Does having a business strategy ensure your business’s future?

The short answer is, yes and no.

Here’s why.

By getting a business strategy in place, you will be able to set yourself up in a better position to get more clients and establish goals that you can reach to keep growing your business.

However, it does not ensure it. There are a lot of factors that come into running a business such as: Taking PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technology, Legal, Environment) into account, competitors, clients’ time and availability, and so much more. Developing a business takes a lot of work, especially if you’re the only working employee in it.

So having a business strategy doesn’t necessarily ensure your business’ future but it is essential in giving it an actual chance at succeeding. But where do you get the best business strategies for your personal fitness business?

Well, you’re in luck! Because we’ve partnered with the one and only Fitness Sales Systems to bring you Master Classes on how you can build and strategize your personal training business!

The Actual Truth about being a Personal Trainer.

As we said earlier, being a personal trainer is more than just knowing how to do proper nutrition or knowing how low a person should squat. It’s also about making sure you get yourself out there. And that is where a lot of personal trainers lack, unfortunately.

Take the words of Nikos from Fitness Sales System for example. In a podcast with Samuel Main, he said “Once you get your level 2 or level 3, it’s like just getting your driver’s license it doesn’t mean you know how to drive. You don’t know how to sell, you don’t know how to talk to people, but thank God I had that experience in the restaurant. It’s my first day on the gym floor, I got my Fitness First shirt and my name badge with a personal trainer at the back. So, I’m walking around and people can see and were like ‘Ugh new PT’ No eye contact, like f- off, I don’t want to talk to you blah blah this and that. And after my first day, I went back home and I called Mum and Dad and I was like ‘I can’t do this”

Even with all the training and certificates, he did not really understand how to start his personal training business which is relatable for a lot of personal trainers out there, I’m sure.

He goes on to say “Second day I come in, and on my board, I got ex-military, ex-paratrooper, special forces, green beret, and I can see a guy looking at my stuff and was like ‘Sh- it’s a lead’.  So, I went up to him and had a chat and that was my first sign-up.”

Was it just dumb luck? Or was there actually some skill to it? Well, the answer is the latter. Because even if the person checking out Nikos’ profile was interested, it was Nikos that came up to him and, with his experience of bringing people in, found a way to get his first client.

Final Thoughts

If you’re still not convinced that having a business strategy is important, let me put it in terms of another analogy. It’s kind of like cooking without a recipe–you might end up with something edible, but it’s going to be a lot harder and take a lot longer than if you had followed a set of instructions.

The same goes for your business. You can definitely get by without one, but it will be difficult and time-consuming, and you’re likely to make some mistakes that could have been avoided if you’d only taken the time to plan things out. So this June 15th tune in to the master class where we’ll teach you everything you need to know about creating and implementing an effective business strategy for your business.
